AIGA Conference Notes: Make | Think

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), held its biannual design conference this past week in Memphis, Tennessee. The motivation for attending this conference was the hopes that the speakers and workshops would provide some additional knowledge and inspiration to our current work and build some momentum for the coming year.

The conference provided the opportunity to participate in many thought-provoking workshops, listen to some very talented speakers, talk to vendors, and mingle with the design elite. These conferences, in their basic form, allow us as an industry to share stories from our practices, discover new inspiration, discuss design theory, and develop new skills with the hope that everyone returns to the office with renewed passion for the design process.

This hope was realized in the office of Tobin Lehman. With numerous ideas to integrate into our clients’ projects, and new tools to create more successful work, this conference may be a turning point in our work.

Interested in seeing it for yourself? Check out the following links to some of the conference’s best speakers. (Videos will be posted soon via AIGA, so many of these are simply for reference.)

David Butler, VP of Global Design, Coke
Roger Martin, Author

Al Bell, Founder Stax Records

Browser Compatibility Policy Update: Fall 2009

This post is a general update to inform all on the position on Tobin Lehman Design + Interactive on browser compatibility for new Web site development.

As the Internet continues to be a wonderful place to explore, participate, and consume, the technology we use to engage this plane of reality is in a constant state of development by software developers and their communities. As builder of site that use this technology, we must provide the most progressive and robust experience possible to our clients and their customers, keeping up with these advancements. In this progressive response, we must also leave behind software of the past to continually provide a cost effective solution to our clients. The following list states the current minimum browser standards covered in our development projects.

Microsoft: Internet Explorer 7

Mozilla: Firefox 3.0, Camino 1.5

Apple: Safari 3.0

In addition, as future web browsers emerge on the market, compatibility for your site and these new browsers may become suspect to new issues. As a proactive approach, you or your marketing department should be conducting an evaluation and review of these new browsers as they emerge. Happy browsing!

You can’t work this fast

Its been roughly three weeks since the news that Michael Jackson has departed this earth. While millions of fans across the world watched TV and picked up newspapers to get the latest scoop on the events surrounding his untimely death, some other had a different plan.

http://eternalmoonwalk.com/

You can’t work this fast. Something like this can only come from a community of devout, passionate people who care more about what they are doing than anything else. I don’t think there is a firm on earth that could promise this to a client in less than 3 weeks, then generate enough viral traffic to have such an amazing site flursih so quickly. It seems that passion is stronger than budgets, sleep, and eating.

Par For A Cause Goes Live

Par For A Cause Visit ParForACause.org, a new golf tournament sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Maryland. It is the hopes of the organizers that a strong online presence, including an online registration form will help golfers sign up and pass along information to one another and get the word out about this event.

If you are a golfer, or know anyone who does, please pass along this link and encourage them to sign up. This year’s course is the infamous Musket Ridge golf course, which is one of the top courses in the area. The fee alone to play this course is over eighty dollars, which makes the 125-dollar ticket not that hard to realize, when you throw in the food and beverages included in your fee.

Any what could feel better? Doing something you love to help people in need. This is a true, win-win.

The site also features a blog where the owner, Gary Siegel, writes about current projects in the foundry as well as news and updates about the bronze community. Dont’ forget to check out the step-by-step explanation of the lost wax casting process!

Early Eulogy for IE 6

IE Death MarchWith the soon coming release of a full IE8 and Microsoft’s continuous commitment to half steps in the browser development arena, there has been a lot of murmuring about the eventual fall of Internet Explorer 6. If you are a PC user who may have never been susceptible to the automatic update that pushed many users into IE7, you might be wondering - what’s so bad about IE6? Well, IE6 has been the “thorn in the side” of web designers and developers for many reasons, but much to the use of Microsoft’s proprietary CSS box-model which creates the need for every web site to be built twice, or at least in 1.5 times using different style sheets. Let alone the additional bugs that exist in IE6 that make every task in programming just feel a little more taxing. Read the rest of this entry »

When and Why You Don’t Need a Blog

Blog BubbleIf you are just now getting on the blog bandwagon, you are definitely on the southern side of the bell curve. But it doesn’t mean all is lost and you should drop what you are doing. Blog are great tools for business. They are a great way to journal the events and happenings of your company and bring them to your customers. But for some reason, the buzz surrounding these little publishing gems has reached a new threshold and now every business from janitors to dog sitters have blogs. Maybe we have reality TV to blame. Everyone thinks that details of their day-to-day activity should be passed on to the customers no matter how significant or insignificant they might be. Although I’m sure there is some value to these publications, I have to think that somewhere along the way the intention was lost. These weak or misdirected posts no longer serve their businesses, and may even have a negative effect. So as I’m sure there are list upon lists for reasons to start a blog, I’ve decided to post a list of the reasons to not have one. If your new blog project touches on any of these, you might want to take a second look before you hit ‘publish.’ Read the rest of this entry »
